Simple Birdhouse Building Plans

Build a reliable nesting box for bluebirds with this bluebird house plan, designed as a straightforward cedar box with practical details for airflow, drainage, cleaning, and long-term use.

This design keeps the shape simple and functional: a square wooden body, a sloped hinged roof, side ventilation holes, bottom drainage holes, and a protected front entrance. The plan uses a 1 1/2″ entrance hole with a 4″ x 4″ metal hole guard, helping protect the opening while keeping the front clean and durable.

The build is based on 1×6 and 1×8 cedar boards, stainless steel screws, two 1″ hinges, and a small top beam under the roof to help the lid close properly. The plan includes a shopping list, cutting list, recommended tools, size drawings, model views, and step-by-step construction details, making it easier to prepare materials before starting.

Inside the front panel, small grooves are included to help young birds climb out of the nest box. The side panels include 5/8″ ventilation holes, and the bottom panel includes four 3/8″ drainage holes to help reduce trapped moisture inside the box.

The hinged roof gives access for seasonal cleaning and inspection after nesting is complete. As with the best practical birdhouse designs, this plan intentionally avoids an exterior perch. Native cavity-nesting birds do not need a perch, and leaving it out helps make the box less accessible to predators or unwanted birds.

This project is a good fit for a DIY bluebird house, cedar nesting box, backyard birdhouse, or garden wildlife project. You can leave the cedar unfinished for a natural look or apply a bird-safe exterior finish, while keeping the inside untreated.
