Hanging Wren Birdhouse Plans

Build a charming hanging nesting box with these hanging wren birdhouse plans, designed for creating a simple wooden birdhouse for wrens and other small cavity-nesting birds.

This design features a classic hanging house shape with a pitched roof, compact body, and a front-facing entrance that gives it a clean, garden-friendly look. The plan includes a 1 1/8″ entrance hole, side ventilation holes, interior grooves to help young birds climb out, and a 3″ x 3″ metal entrance hole guard to help protect the opening from wear and damage.

Unlike many decorative birdhouses, this design is made with practical nesting details in mind. It uses cedar board, #8 stainless steel screws, roof panels, a right-side access panel with a dowel and barrel bolt latch, and a hanging hook for suspended placement. The access panel makes seasonal cleaning and maintenance easier after nesting activity is finished.

The birdhouse intentionally does not include an exterior perch. Native cavity-nesting birds do not need one, and leaving it out helps reduce access for predators or invasive birds.
